Why Did Donald Trump Talk About a ‘Kill Switch’? Said AI Risks Cannot Be Ignored
Donald Trump on AI: U.S. President Donald Trump said in a recent interview that there should be a “kill switch” for Artificial Intelligence (AI). He believes AI could pose certain risks to the banking system. Although this technology can make banking systems more advanced and secure, its dangers cannot be ignored.
Trump’s Concerns About AI
In an interview broadcast on Wednesday, President Donald Trump made surprising remarks about AI. According to him, Artificial Intelligence may create risks for the banking sector, making government safety measures necessary. Trump said AI safety systems should include a “kill switch.”
At the same time, he also acknowledged that AI could make banking systems more efficient, secure, and trustworthy. When asked whether AI could reduce public trust in banks, Trump told Fox Business Network that it possibly could. However, he added that AI could also become a technology that greatly improves the banking industry.
AI Should Have a “Kill Switch” — Trump
According to a Reuters report, Trump’s interview for the program “Mornings with Maria” was recorded on Tuesday. When asked whether the government should keep a safety mechanism or “kill switch” for AI technology, Trump replied, “Absolutely.”
This means Trump believes there should be an emergency shutdown mechanism for AI systems.
AI Risks Cannot Be Ignored
Trump said companies must ensure that rapid AI development does not create situations that could threaten humanity. He also stated that AI has the potential to make sectors like banking much safer and more effective, but its risks should not be overlooked.
Questions Raised Over Anthropic’s New AI Model
Trump made these comments after cybersecurity experts warned this week that Anthropic’s new AI model, “Mythos,” could accelerate complex cyberattacks and create major challenges for the banking industry because of vulnerabilities in older technology systems.
Anthropic has reportedly deployed Mythos for around 40 companies to identify software weaknesses that could make them easy targets for cyberattacks. The company has clarified that it is closely monitoring the system.
What Is a Kill Switch?
A “kill switch” is a safety and security mechanism used to immediately shut down a system, program, or technology during emergencies.
For example, if your smartphone gets stolen and you have a special remote feature to lock it instantly, pressing one button could turn off or lock the phone remotely so the thief cannot misuse it. A kill switch works similarly for software systems and technologies.
